NMC updates 2026-27 MBBS seat matrix to 1,40,664 seats across 839 colleges

The National Medical Commission has issued an updated MBBS seat matrix for 2026-27. In a letter dated 21 September 2026 to all medical colleges and the Medical Counselling Committee, Secretary Dr Raghav Langer forwarded a Medical Assessment and Rating Board public notice of the same date enclosing the matrix as on 18 September. It lists 1,40,664 seats in 839 colleges outside the Institutes of National Importance: 1,27,028 renewed and 13,636 increased. Government colleges account for 64,121 seats at 447 institutions and private colleges for 76,543 at 392, including 3,850 seats in 41 newly established colleges. Medical Dialogues reports the previous matrix of 9 September carried 1,40,214 seats across 836 colleges.

The matrix includes approvals by MARB and the first and second appeal committees and remains subject to revision. The letter says colleges must admit only against approved seats, and that excess admissions will be treated as non-compliance with the NMC Act, 2019, attracting regulatory and penal action. The MARB notice tells counselling committees not to permit admission beyond notified seats and to refer any discrepancy to MARB. Medical Dialogues also reports that private colleges yet to submit their e-bank guarantee must do so within seven days, with the Letter of Permission issued only after verification.

Students can check a college's approved intake in the matrix on nmc.org.in before accepting an allotment.
