Six months pregnant, an abortion by unqualified staff, a doctor on a video call: the August 2026 death Andhra Pradesh Medical Council's Anti-Quackery Committee was ordered to investigate in Yerragonda

Compiled by TrustMBBS from published news reports ·

Andhra Pradesh's medical council keeps an Anti-Quackery Committee because unqualified practice in the state is not confined to roadside clinics. A case in August 2026 showed what can happen when a hospital owned by a registered practitioner is run day to day by staff with no qualifications, with the doctor present only on a phone screen.

According to The South First, a 31-year-old woman who was about six months pregnant was admitted to a private hospital in Yerragondapalem, Markapuram district, on 25 August 2026 with severe headache and abdominal pain. Police said unqualified medical staff carried out an abortion that day while the hospital's registered medical practitioner gave instructions over a video call. Her condition worsened and she died on 27 August. Sub-Inspector Deva Kumar of Yerragondapalem police station told The South First that the family was reluctant to complain: "We had to push them to file an FIR." He said the family denied any wrongdoing by the hospital, and her husband told police he believed her existing health problems caused her death. The case was registered as an unnatural death with no accused named, district medical officers visited the hospital, and police were awaiting a Forensic Science Laboratory report. The sub-inspector said the hospital was not equipped to perform a scan but that police had not ruled out an abortion. Local media raised suspicions of an illegal sex-determination test, which neither report confirmed.

On 28 August the Andhra Pradesh Medical Council announced an inquiry. Medical Dialogues reported on 2 September that council chairman Dr Garlapati Nanda Kishore said the Anti-Quackery Committee, headed by Dr Subba Naidu, would verify the facts and take legal and disciplinary action within the council's mandate, coordinating with health department officials, district administrations and the police. He said "unauthorised medical practices will not at all be tolerated" and cited Section 20 of the Andhra Pradesh Medical Council Act and Section 34 of the NMC Act 2019, under which practising without valid credentials is an offence. Neither report named the hospital, the staff or the doctor, and no arrest had been reported.

The mechanism is that a hospital can be run by a registered medical practitioner on paper while the person in the room is not one. The licence attaches to the owner, not to whoever is holding the instruments, and a video call does not make the hands at the bedside qualified. The family's reluctance to complain, which the police described openly, is why such cases so rarely reach a regulator at all.

For families the lesson is to ask who will actually perform a procedure and to ask for that person's medical council registration, not the owner's. For students, a hospital that lets unqualified staff operate is also the kind of place that sells observership or internship certificates no regulator will accept; check that any hospital offering you clinical exposure has its registered doctors physically present. The Andhra Pradesh Medical Council's committee exists to receive complaints, and the police in this case made clear that an FIR can be filed even when a family hesitates.
