Nepal's Medical Education Commission fixes 9,691 seats for 2026-27, adding 110 MBBS places at state colleges

Nepal's Medical Education Commission, at its 28th meeting chaired by Prime Minister Balendra Shah, fixed seats for the 2026-27 academic session at 9,691 across 84 institutions, OnlineKhabar reported on 16 October 2026. That is 418 more than the previous year. MBBS seats rose by 110, BSc Nursing by 210 and Bachelor of Medical Studies by 98. The additions went to government institutions: Shaheed Dasharath Chand University of Health Sciences in Geta, Kailali, received 50 MBBS seats for the first time, while B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in Dharan and the Nepalese Army Institute of Health Sciences each gained 30. Private colleges kept their existing allocations.

The commission said seats were allocated from monitoring reports after 90 institutions filed self-assessments, and that it does not approve seats simply on request. The meeting also discussed subsistence allowances for MBBS and BDS interns, and a task force under the commission will be formed to study the issue. The Kathmandu Post reported on 1 October that the integrated entrance exam was being prepared from 31 October, about a month behind the calendar, with 77,359 applicants across programmes; last year 2,428 seats were reserved for foreign students and the MBBS fee was Rs 4 million to Rs 4.4 million.
