More than fifty caesarean sections by a "gynaecologist" who had no degree: Assam's string of fake-doctor arrests in Darrang, Cachar and Silchar

Compiled by TrustMBBS from published news reports ·

Assam's police have spent 2025 and 2026 arresting people who practised medicine on qualifications they did not have, and one of the cases involves surgery on a scale that is hard to read calmly.

According to Deccan Herald, a man arrested in Assam for posing as a gynaecologist had performed more than fifty caesarean sections before he was caught. He held no medical degree. The Sentinel reported the arrest in Darrang district of an impostor who had claimed a fake MBBS qualification, and in Silchar of a man running a clinic on forged certificates. Medical Dialogues reported Cachar police arresting a fake doctor practising without qualifications, and, in a separate Silchar case, a man arrested for running a racket selling bogus medical degrees.

The caesarean case is the one that answers the question people ask about fake doctors, which is whether they do any harm if the patients recover. Fifty women were operated on by someone with no surgical training, in facilities that let him, over a period long enough to reach fifty. Each operation that went well was luck, and the ones that did not are the reason the police were called.

Assam borders Bangladesh and sits on the route many students from the north-east take to medical colleges abroad, and the state's own cases reflect the same gap the foreign-admission frauds exploit: a shortage of doctors in district towns, a population that cannot easily check a register, and a supply of people willing to print a certificate. The state medical council's register is public, and every arrest here was of a person who was not on it. For families in the north-east, the same search box answers the other question, whether the "MBBS abroad" a consultancy is selling leads to a degree the council will ever enter.
