1,372 fake mark sheets and degrees, priced from Rs 50,000 to Rs 4 lakh: the raid on Monad University in Hapur and the chairman detained with them

Compiled by TrustMBBS from published news reports ·

A degree from a real, recognised private university is the hardest kind of fake to detect, because the institution that would verify it is the one that issued it. In May 2025 the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force raided such a university.

According to India TV, the Free Press Journal and The Tribune, an STF team raided Monad University at Pilkhuwa in Hapur district on a Saturday evening and recovered a large cache of fake mark sheets and degrees, reported by one outlet as around 1,372 documents, along with computers and records. The university's chairman, Vijendra Singh Hooda, and staff members named in the reports as Kamal Batra, Imran, Gaurav, Mukesh Thakur, N. K. Singhal, Vipul Chaudhary and Abhishek Pandey were detained; the Free Press Journal put the arrests at ten. During questioning, the reports said, the accused admitted charging between Rs 50,000 and Rs 4 lakh per mark sheet. A first information report was registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita's provisions on cheating, forgery of valuable security, forged documents and organised crime. All those named are entitled to the presumption of innocence.

The case is not about a medical college. It is about the assumption underneath every verification a family does. When a foreign regulator, an employer or an Indian university writes to a university to confirm a degree, it relies on the university's answer. A university whose own leadership sells documents can confirm anything.

Two practical consequences. For a student choosing a private university in any subject: a recognised institution with a chairman in custody for selling degrees is a warning about how it treats its real students' credentials too, because every genuine Monad degree now carries a question mark. For a family verifying someone else's qualification, a doctor's or a consultant's: the university registrar is a necessary check but not a sufficient one; regulators keep their own registers precisely because paper from a university can be bought, and the register is the second lock.
