🚩 Scam pattern

Impersonating a real college or agent

Someone uses the name, logo or even staff names of a genuine university or a genuine authorised agent. The victim does the right checks — the institution is real — but is talking to the wrong people.

0 reviewed reports and 6 first-person stories of this pattern on TrustMBBS.

How it usually goes

  1. Emails from "admissions@university-name.com" style domains that the university doesn't own.
  2. A WhatsApp profile with the college logo and a dean's name.
  3. Payment instructions that "changed this year" to a new account.

Red flags

  • 🚩 Bank account changes communicated by chat
  • 🚩 Email domain that isn't the one on the university's own website
  • 🚩 Reluctance to take a call on a number listed on the official site

How to verify in 10 minutes

  1. Call or email a contact you found on the official site yourself, and ask them to confirm the person you're dealing with.
  2. Pay only to the account printed in the official fee invoice, confirmed via that independent channel.
  3. Ask a verified student at that college whether the name you were given is real.
