Indian Embassy in Astana says medical course in Kazakhstan is seven years; licence after six unclear
The Embassy of India in Astana issued an Important Advisory dated 1 October 2026 on medical education and course duration in Kazakhstan, aimed at Indian students planning to enrol from the 2026-27 academic year. The embassy said that under a recent policy change the standard duration of the medical course in Kazakhstan is seven years, and that international students may be able to complete it in six years through an accelerated pathway subject to conditions set by the relevant authority.
The embassy said it has no clear official confirmation on whether a student who completes the six-year accelerated programme will receive a licence to practise medicine, and that it has asked the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Kazakhstan for clarification. Until a response arrives, students and parents were told to verify the rules with the university and Kazakh authorities before enrolling, not to assume a six-year course, and to plan for seven years. A separate embassy addendum lists 13 institutions licensed for the Continuous Integrated Medical Education programme, per Kazakhstan's Note Verbale of 11 December 2025; that page was last updated on 30 October 2026.
