Two fake Ahpra certificates for eighteen months in Bundaberg, a falsified transcript and altered invoice in Launceston: Australia's 2026 nurse-registration forgery cases

Compiled by TrustMBBS from published news reports ·

Australia registers every nurse, midwife, doctor and paramedic through a single national scheme run by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, Ahpra, and the register is public and searchable. Registration is renewed every year and employers are expected to check it. Two cases decided in 2026 show what happens when an employer accepts a certificate instead of looking at the register.

According to Ahpra's media release of 26 March 2026, Janette Slater's nursing registration lapsed in September 2022 after she received a renewal reminder and contacted the agency about re-applying but never did. In November 2022 she applied for a registered nurse position at a medical centre in Bundaberg, Queensland, was hired, and worked there for 18 months, giving her employer two fake registration certificates. She pleaded guilty in Bundaberg Magistrates Court on 24 March 2026 to one count of holding herself out as a registered health practitioner and was fined $10,000 with $1,750 in costs. Acting Magistrate Nigel Rees said the offending threatened to undermine public confidence in health practitioners and noted that she resigned once her ruse was discovered; she remains unregistered. Ahpra's chief executive Justin Untersteiner said working while unregistered is not only unacceptable but illegal. The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Journal reported the sentence on 27 March.

In Tasmania, Pulse Tasmania reported on 20 October 2026 that the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal had cancelled the registration of Lauren Elizabeth Butler, a former emergency department nurse at Launceston General Hospital. Between December 2020 and 2023 she applied for graduate paramedic roles with Ambulance Tasmania and for two senior nursing posts, claiming a Charles Sturt University paramedicine qualification she had not completed and a postgraduate critical care qualification she did not hold, supported by false Ahpra receipt numbers, an altered Ahpra invoice and a falsified university transcript. She told investigators the transcript came from a malware email and that the errors were honest mistakes, then produced a fraudulent medical certificate to avoid an Ahpra interview. The tribunal rejected her explanations, reprimanded her, cancelled her registration, which had been suspended since June 2023, barred her from reapplying for three years and ordered her to pay the board's costs. She did not take part in the proceedings and the tribunal had no information on any criminal charge.

The mechanism in both cases was a document the employer could have checked in seconds against the public register. Certificates, receipt numbers, invoices and transcripts were all forged; the register was not.

For students abroad the lesson is the same whether you are the applicant or the patient: a regulator's online register outranks any paper. Keep your own registration current, never let an agent handle your credentials, and verify anyone who treats or hires you by name on the official register, not by the certificate they show.
