RMB 75,000 a year, a CSCA score, a written exam and an interview, six MBBS students on two July lists: what Shanghai Jiao Tong's brand-new English MBBS actually requires

Compiled by TrustMBBS from published news reports ·

According to Factly, citing NBEMS data, China alone accounted for almost 30 per cent of all candidates who sat India's FMGE screening test since 2012. The Embassy of India in Beijing says only universities on the Ministry of Education's annual list may admit foreigners to English-taught clinical medicine. Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine is a brand-new entrant to that market; nothing here is an allegation against the school.

According to the school's International Students Office, its 2026 notice of 3 December 2025 offers a six-year Clinical Medicine (MBBS) programme taught in English to non-Chinese passport holders. Published costs are an RMB 800 non-refundable application fee, tuition of RMB 75,000 a year and proof of a bank deposit of at least RMB 100,000. Admission is not exam-free: applicants need a China Scholastic Competency Assessment score in mathematics, physics and chemistry, an English test (IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 90 unless exempt) and an interview, and must prepay tuition within two weeks of pre-admission.

Intake is tiny: the second-batch list of 14 July 2026 names five students, four for the MBBS, and the third batch of 28 July names two, all chosen on application materials, a written examination and interviews. The World Directory of Medical Schools entry F0000991 shows the English-taught MBBS starting in 2025 and records no accreditation status for it. There are no graduates yet and no FMGE record: the first cohort cannot finish before about 2031. No strikes, closures, court cases or impostor scandals naming the school were found.

The risk is the gap between the university's rules and what intermediaries say. One consultancy page states 'no entrance examination', TOEFL 75 and an application period 'to be notified', where the university's notice requires the CSCA report, an interview, TOEFL 90 and fixed dates, and its admission lists cite a written examination. That is a discrepancy, not proof of fraud, but it is how seats get sold on terms never offered. The Consulate General of India in Guangzhou records students cheated by agents promising admission on fake university letterheads, and according to Deccan Chronicle, Hyderabad's police commissioner warned on 2 May 2026 of agents selling seats in China and elsewhere with fabricated documents and fake allotment letters.

Read the notice on the school's own site, pay only to the university's bank account by SWIFT as the Guangzhou consulate advises, and treat any promise of a guaranteed seat, no exam or a lower fee as contradicting the published rules. Check each year that the school appears on the current Ministry of Education notice; the 2019 list the Embassy cites predates this programme. A WDOMS listing is a directory entry, not recognition by the NMC, PMDC or BMDC, and the Embassy says Indian students need NEET-UG, Chinese to HSK-4 and a 12-month internship at the same institution.
