Out of prison, back in a clinic, arrested again within days: the Los Angeles "doctor" of 2025, the teenage "doctor" sentenced again at 25, and why American licence boards publish everything

Compiled by TrustMBBS from published news reports ·

The United States licenses doctors state by state, and every state board publishes its register, its disciplinary actions and, increasingly, its criminal referrals. Its false doctors are therefore well documented, and they keep coming back.

According to KTLA and CBS Los Angeles, a man recently released from prison was arrested in the Los Angeles area in May 2025 for impersonating a doctor, and then arrested again days later after he was found to have continued treating patients. NBC News earlier reported the sentencing of a man who had first become notorious as a teenager posing as a doctor in Florida, and who at 25 was sent to prison again for a new scam.

Two features of these cases matter for anyone outside the United States. The first is repetition. The Los Angeles man had been convicted and imprisoned, was released, and resumed within days, which is the pattern of someone for whom the title is the livelihood rather than a one-off deception. The register did not stop him, because the people he treated did not consult it. The second is the publicity: the boards' records, the arrests and the sentences are public, which is why these cases can be read at all. In many of the countries on this site, the same man would have left no trace.

Operation Nightingale, the sale of 7,600 fake nursing diplomas by three Florida schools, is recorded elsewhere on this site, and together with the impostor cases it shows both ends of the American problem: forged credentials that get onto registers, and people who never try to get on them.

For a student, the United States is less a destination for a first medical degree than a goal afterwards, through the ECFMG and residency. Both verify at source, exhaustively. The school you choose now will be the one the ECFMG writes to. Choose one that is in its directory and answers its letters.
