Four suspensions in four years, a 'direct contact zone' and no published fee schedule: due diligence on the University of Tripoli Faculty of Medicine
On paper, Libya passes the first test a foreign student is told to apply. The national accreditor, the National Center for Quality Assurance and Accreditation of Educational and Training Institutions, holds WFME Recognition Status until February 2034, the same status as India's NMC and Pakistan's PMDC. The University of Tripoli Faculty of Medicine is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. Nothing in this piece is an allegation against the faculty. The facts below concern its surroundings and a missing document.
The campus has closed repeatedly. According to the Libya Observer, on 27 August 2022 the university suspended studies and exams in all faculties because of armed clashes. On 25 November 2022 LibyaReview reported that studies remained suspended because faculty had been on strike for nearly two months over unpaid salaries. University World News reported a suspension of studies, exams and administrative work from 15 to 19 August 2023 after fighting between the Al-Radaa Force and the 444 Brigade spread towards the airport and the university; a professor told the publication that fighters were killed in front of the university gate. Middle East Monitor reported the same suspension.
On 10 August 2024, according to the state news agency LANA and LibyaReview, the university suspended all studies, exams and administrative work until further notice after clashes in Tajoura killed at least nine people. On 14 May 2025, University World News reported, it suspended everything again two days after fighting erupted, evacuated female students from the Fornaj dormitory, and reopened on 18 May. According to Almenassa, the Tripoli University Student Union rejected that resumption, saying the campus lies in a "direct contact zone" and calling on all armed parties to withdraw from around the university.
The Erasmus+ UNIGOV report on Libyan higher education records that the system is state-financed and says nothing about fees for non-Libyan students. We found no published fee schedule for foreign medical students, so an agent's price cannot be checked against any official source. India's Ministry of External Affairs banned travel to Libya from May 2016 and in August 2024 replaced the ban with advice to avoid non-essential travel. Libya has no row in Careers360's country-wise FMGE tables for 2020 to 2024, so no agent can show a record of Libyan-trained Indian graduates sitting that exam.
The lesson is to separate three questions. Is the school recognised? Yes. Can the course run? Four suspensions in four successive years say that is not guaranteed. Can the price be verified? Not against any document we found. Ask the faculty's international office in writing for the fee, pay the institution and not the agent, keep your originals, and check your own country's travel advice before anyone books a flight.
