"Doctor and gynaecologist", "general director", none of it true: the surrogacy company front man convicted in Spain, and the "medic" caught stealing from a Málaga hospital's consulting rooms
Spain's cases of 2024, the "rehabilitation doctor" who practised for thirty years and the 764 patients billed under another physician's number, are recorded elsewhere on this site. Two cases since then show the title being used for frauds that have nothing to do with treating anyone.
According to Infobae, a court in Spain in April 2025 confirmed the conviction of a man who had presented himself as a doctor and gynaecologist and as general director of a surrogacy company, YourSurrogacy, and who held none of the qualifications he claimed. He had taken money from two couples with the promise of a child by surrogacy, which is not legal in Spain and which he was in no position to arrange. In September 2026, The Olive Press reported that a man dressed as a medic was caught trying to steal from the consulting rooms at Málaga's Hospital Clínico, having used the appearance of staff to move through the building.
The surrogacy case is the one that applies to students. The man did not need to treat a patient; he needed the title to make a promise credible, and the promise was the product. Agents selling medical-school places use the same device, a "doctor" at the head of the consultancy, a "professor" who "knows the dean", and the purpose is identical: to make a family stop checking. The couples in the surrogacy case were sold a result that the law of the country did not allow, by a man whose qualifications a two-minute search of the medical college's register would have disproved.
Spain's medical colleges publish their registers, as does every professional body in the European Union. Before paying anyone who calls themselves a doctor for anything, look them up. Before paying any consultancy for a seat, look up the school, on the regulator's list, and the licence, on the regulator's list. The title is the oldest costume in fraud, and the register is how you see through it.
