A thousand students who paid, a branch blacklisted, an intake on hold: Tashkent Medical University's 2025 admission season, and what "NMC-approved" does and does not cover

Compiled by TrustMBBS from published news reports ·

Uzbekistan became one of the fastest-growing MBBS destinations for Indian students after 2022, and 2025 was the year the strain showed.

According to Careers360, more than a thousand students who had applied to Tashkent State Medical University for the 2025 intake were left waiting, fearing both a lost year and lost money, as admissions were delayed. The university had merged three institutes, and after several students who had paid for seats were refused entry, the National Medical Commission in India blacklisted the university's Chirchik branch for violating the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate regulations; Careers360 reported the Indian embassy's account of several issues, including instances of harassment of Indian students. Admissions resumed later in the season with a published fee and an August deadline. Medical Dialogues reported the NMC's wider advisory warning students about four foreign institutions in Belize and Uzbekistan.

Around the universities, an agent economy has formed. Eduwisor and other advisory sites describe agents in the Uzbekistan market luring students with unrealistically low fees, "direct university tie-ups", discounts said to come from a dean, and guaranteed admission, all of it aimed at families comparing prices rather than recognition.

The hard part for a family is that "NMC-approved" is a phrase agents use as if it were a seal. The NMC does not approve foreign universities; it sets conditions a graduate must meet, and it can and does issue advisories and blacklist specific campuses, as it did with Chirchik, after students have already paid. A university being recognised in its own country does not freeze that status.

Before paying for any seat in Uzbekistan: read the NMC's current advisories for that specific institution and campus, pay the university's own account and get its own receipt, keep the originals, and treat "pay the agent, the university will confirm later" as the sentence that preceded most of the losses in 2025.
