A blacklist before the academic year: Egypt's 2024 list of institutions selling unaccredited degrees, and how to check an Egyptian medical college against it

Compiled by TrustMBBS from published news reports ·

Egypt has become a serious destination for foreign medical students, including a growing number from India, Malaysia and Africa, and its public universities are old and well regarded. Alongside them a market in unlicensed institutions grew, and in 2024 the state named names.

According to Daily News Egypt, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research published a blacklist of institutions falsely claiming to offer accredited degrees, ahead of the 2024/25 academic year, as part of what the ministry called an intensified crackdown on unlicensed bodies issuing unaccredited certificates. The list was posted on the ministry's website and social media so that students and parents could identify fraudulent operations. The minister, Ayman Ashour, was quoted saying the ministry would not tolerate those who exploit students and their families. The ministry's own announcement described the second half of the measure: a published and regularly updated list of every accredited higher-education institution in the country, and a media office monitoring advertisements and online promotion by unlicensed bodies, with suspicious cases referred to a judicial enforcement committee.

Why a student abroad should care. Egyptian medical admission for foreigners runs through the ministry's own channels and through the universities' international offices; the fees are published in foreign currency and the institutions are on the accredited list. The bodies on the blacklist trade on the same reputation, with names that echo real universities, offices in Cairo, and agents abroad who present them as "private medical colleges in Egypt". A student who has never seen the campus cannot tell the two apart from a brochure.

The check is now simple and official. Before paying anyone for an Egyptian medical seat, find the institution on the ministry's accredited list, and confirm the medicine programme itself is accredited, not just the institution. Check the name against the blacklist. Confirm the World Directory of Medical Schools entry. And ask your home regulator, in writing, whether it recognises the degree. A real Egyptian faculty of medicine passes all four; a blacklist entry passes none, no matter how good the website.
