38,000 students sat the exam twice: the 2024 MDCAT paper leak in Sindh, the university officials charged, and what it means for a merit-list seat
Gambat Medical College, part of the Pir Abdul Qadir Shah Jeelani Institute of Medical Sciences in Khairpur district, is a government college. Its MBBS seats are filled from the Sindh merit list, and that list is built on the Medical and Dental College Admission Test, the MDCAT. In 2024 the integrity of that test collapsed, and every seat in the province was affected.
According to Dawn, the Sindh High Court stayed the MDCAT results after allegations that the paper for the 22 September 2024 test had leaked, and ordered a probe. The Federal Investigation Agency opened an inquiry on 18 October 2024 on a complaint that the leak had "damaged the career of meritorious students of Sindh". Samaa reported that the FIA's cyber-crime circle arrested three men, named as Shiraz Bilal, Tariq Aziz Samo and Shan Durrani, alleged to be key members of a group that sold leaked papers to candidates in 2023 and 2024. The Express Tribune reported that students themselves handed the FIA the phone numbers of the people who had offered them papers. On 10 December the FIA registered a case against the controller and deputy controller of examinations at Dow University of Health Sciences, the body that conducted the test, and thirteen others, and Dawn reported two DUHS officials arrested in Karachi. Those charged are entitled to the presumption of innocence.
The test was held again. More than 38,000 students sat the MDCAT retake across Sindh, and the merit lists for colleges like Gambat were rebuilt from the new scores.
What a student should take from this. The people selling papers were not selling a seat at Gambat or anywhere else; they were selling a score, and a score obtained that way was cancelled for everyone when the court intervened. In a merit-list system, the only route into a government college is the test, and anyone offering "guaranteed selection", "internal contacts" or "paper before the exam" is selling either a crime or nothing. Check the merit list published by the admitting university, not a list sent to you on WhatsApp; and if someone offers you a paper, the FIA's cyber-crime wing is the number to keep, as the 2024 candidates who reported the sellers showed.
