The school was established in 1964 as the Xianning Branch of Hubei Medical College. The college became an independent medical school, renamed Xianning Medical College, in June 1994. In March 2002, the medical college merged with Xianning Normal College and formed Xianning University. In December 2011, the university was renamed Hubei University of Science and Technology.
