Additional Information: Founded in 1922 as Makerere College, a technical school under the Ugandan government. As of 1949, the college became an independent institution governed by representatives of all the British East African territories (Kenya, Tanganyika, Uganda and Zanzibar) and was known as University College of East Africa. The University College of East Africa had a 'special relationship' with the University of London to allow students of University College to study for degrees issued by the University of London. In 1963, the University College became the University of East Africa and was no longer affiliated with the University of London. In 1970, it became an independent national university of Uganda.
